DG23--Pediatrics to Geriatrics, From One to Ninety-Two

In the era of highly effective modulator therapy, our patients are becoming healthier, and therefore living longer. They are also left with more time to explore exercise, and recreational activities. In light of this, our role as physical therapists is evolving to include keeping our patients fit, strong and pain free throughout the lifespan. In this course, we will begin reviewing developmental assessment tools to use with pediatric patients, discuss both pain management interventions and strength assessment tools to use for our adolescent and adult population and end with discussing strength implications for the aging patient with CF. After attending this session, you will have a better understanding of developmental skills, pain and strength in patients with CF throughout the lifespan, and you will be able to utilize assessment tools in your clinic to meet the needs of your patients with CF.

Learning Objectives:

  • Choose developmental assessment tools to meet the needs of your pediatric CF center and identify higher risk children with CF that warrant further evaluation or referral.
  • Review skeletal muscle physiology and employ clinical strength assessment tools to educate, evaluate and develop interventions for people with cystic fibrosis throughout the lifespan.
  • Review current data on the prevalence of pain in people with CF and understand how pain and musculoskeletal impairments impact participation and function at any age.
